In our Xiamen wiper blade factory, most days have a familiar rhythm: discussing designs, checking fitment, preparing samples and keeping production moving. During Mid-Autumn Festival, we took time to enjoy a different rhythm together: the sound of six dice landing in a bowl.
Our team gathered for Bo Bing, a much-loved local festival game, followed by a dinner together. It was a chance to share our hometown’s traditions with colleagues and to thank the people whose work makes YOUNGLOOK what it is.
Mid-Autumn Festival in Xiamen
Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. For many families, it is a time to come home, share mooncakes and a meal, and look up at the full moon. The festival is closely associated with reunion and good wishes.
Here in Xiamen, Fujian Province, the celebration has another familiar sound: dice rattling inside a bowl. That is Bo Bing (博饼), often called the Mooncake Dice Game in English. It is a tradition that connects the holiday to the local culture of Southern Fujian, also known as Minnan.
What Is Bo Bing?
The game needs just six dice and a bowl. Players take turns rolling; the combinations determine different prize levels. Some prize names come from the ranks of China’s historical imperial examinations. The highest level is called Zhuangyuan (状元), the title given to the top candidate in those examinations.
The rules may sound unfamiliar to someone seeing Bo Bing for the first time. Around the table, though, its appeal is easy to understand: everyone waits for the dice to settle, checks the result together and cheers when a colleague wins. Today, many groups celebrate with a range of festive prizes alongside the traditional names.
Xiamen’s Mid-Autumn Bo Bing is recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage folk custom. For our team, it is also a tradition we can take part in together, year after year.
An Evening with the YOUNGLOOK Team
When our colleagues gathered around the Bo Bing table, work conversations gave way to guesses, laughter and the familiar question: “Who will win Zhuangyuan?” Each turn gave everyone something to watch. A roll could bring a prize or simply another reason to cheer for the next person.
After the game, we sat down for dinner. It gave colleagues from different parts of the company time to talk beyond the day’s orders and schedules. The evening felt warm and relaxed: a shared local custom, a meal and good company.
